Lance Corporal Robert Storey
This man was probably the Robert Storey born on 2 December 1894 at Ballydonnelly, Duneane, County Antrim, the fifth of six children of labourer Robert Storey and his wife Rose (nee McBurney). At the time of the 1901 Census he was living at Ballydonnelly with his grandparents and four of his siblings.
Storey enlisted in the North Irish Horse on 8 September 1914 (No.1169). He embarked for France with D Squadron on 1 May the following year.
He remained in France with D Squadron (part of the 1st North Irish Horse Regiment from May 1916) until late February 1917, when he and another North Irish Horseman, William Govan, transferred to the Military Mounted Police, with the rank of lance corporal. Storey was issued regimental number P/8091.
In August 1917 Storey was wounded. He was evacuated to the UK on 5 September. It is likely that he was discharged as no longer physically fit for war service during 1918.
